Ada, the Enchantress of Numbers: A Selection from the Letters of Lord Byron's Daughter and Her Description of the First Computer
Published in Hardcover by CarTech, Inc. (March, 1998)
Authors: Betty A. Toole and Ada King Lovelace
Average review score:

A great book
A very pleasant biography in an original format, allowing for a good understanding of the main character. Typical american biography, where few details are untold, and where the author remains "transparent". We have to assume that B.A.Toole likes Ada, since she wrote a book about her, but we can't figure out why: was it beause she was Byron's daughter, or because she was Babbage's assistant, or because she lived an interesting life, or because she worked on early computers, or for any other reason... It might be a quality of good biographers, but as a French guy, I like to feel a greater intimacy between the autobiographer and the central character. A small disappointment: the lack of details regarding Ada's program for computing Bernouilli's numbers. Having computed some of those by myself, I know what an advantage it is to have at one's disposal a good algorithm to shorten fastidious calculations. In Toole's book, those numbers are barely mentioned, and the chapter 12, even though revised by an US Army colonel, doesn't explain why the Dept of Defense has chosen the ADA language. This having ben said, I took a great pleasure in reading a book which taught me a lot, even if Toole is too discreet on "an affair" that young Ada had when she was 17 years old with one of her preceptors (the great Turner?). Again the French side in me would have liked more details on that topic... Iconography is nice and all graphics are useful. All in all, a very good book to be read by all those who feel interested by an extraordinary woman who remains too little known by the general public.

Ada: Problem Solving and Program Design
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Publishing (September, 1991)
Authors: Michael B. Feldman and Elliot B. Koffman
Average review score:

Good reference, but odd organization
Intended as a text for an introductory computer science course, Ada 95 Problem Solving and Design is thorough reference to the basics of Ada-95 programming, expecially considering the short time between the ratification of the standard and the publishing of this book. The features of the new language are seamlessly integrated; this is not an Ada-83 text with appendices regarding Ada 95. This is helpful for the beginning audience for which it is intended, but Ada-83 programmers may not notice new constructs until too late. This book's major distinction is its abnormal organization; Chapter 4, for example, deals simultaneously with the IF statement and writing your own packages! This serves to quickly introduce newcomers to the more powerful and complex structure of the language, but it sometimes adds confusion. All in all, I would recommend this book as a good introductory text to the language. A small note about the differences in Ada-83 and Ada-95 would have been helpful, but it successfully reaches its target audience.

A great way to introduce a child to a hearing aid.
This is a book to help kids understand what a hearing aid is and why some children need one. The parents of Angie, the girl in this book, did not know she needed one until it became obvious that she was misunderstanding everything that was said to her. If a child who wears a hearing aid will be coming to your child's clasroom, this book gives a humorous introduction to what a hearing aid is and how it works.

from a childrens lit student
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! i'm currently enrolled in a children's literature class as a sophomore in college. This was one of the books I picked up to read as part of our assignment. I love the illustrations, the prose, and the message that this book is trying to convey. Whether you are a mother or father that works the graveyard shift or a stay at home parent, this book can be enjoyed by all!

A Chorus of Cultures Anthology: Developing Literacy Through Multicultural Poetry
Published in Paperback by Hampton Brown Co (April, 1994)
Authors: Alma Flor Ada, Violet J. Harris, and Lee Bennett Hopkins
Average review score:

A Chorus of Cultures
What a nice book this is! "A Chorus of Cultures" has hundreds of multicultural poems and activities that will greatly enhance a primary classroom's literacy program. The book is organized by months, making it easy to plan and incorporate the poetry into your daily activities. It also has several indexes to help locate poems. Some of the poems are too difficult for the younger children, and I found myself having to explain some of the poems to my first graders, but it is easy enough to pick and choose what to use. I found the "Developing Literacy" activities most helpful, and the book includes poems written by children, which greatly impressed my students!

The Cowboy's Lover (Harlequin Superromance, No 619)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (December, 1994)
Author: Ada Steward
Average review score:

Romance, Mystery and adventure!
Great book. Loved the fact that Ada Steward has taken the time to write about the Rodeo clown and give a tribute to the great job he does. This book was filled with sexual desire from the first chapter and keeps it going through the book. The story of her adopted son is great and keeps you glued to the book to the end. The Long time love of the two is inspiring making you think back to that first love you had back at 14. The age diffrence of the two never matters in fact it adds to the sexual Power of the book. A wonderfull read!

Empower Yourself: Every Woman's Guide to Self-Esteem
Published in Paperback by Avon (January, 1997)
Authors: Ada P. Kahn and Sheila Kimmel
Average review score:

A good book worth picking up.
Even though "Woman" is in the title, I think both genders can benefit from this book.

The authors of this book explain in an easy to relate to fashion how all the little things in ones life combined together can affect one's self esteem. I realized I was putting up with things in my life that made me misearable just for the sake of avoiding the consequences of facing them or getting ride of them. The authors do a wonderful job providing ideas and solutions for how to handle the little things (and big things) that we just seem to put up with. And they work. I find myself using the term "squasher" more and more. My friends saw the difference in my appearance, attitude and just my love for life. I explained to them the concept of a squasher and it was amazing to see the light bulbs go on. They now either own a copy of the or have borrowed mine.

For anyone that is feeling a bit low or even just content, I highly recommend this book. It's amazing at how the little stuff can just bring us all down. And it's even more amazing as to how simple the solution to being happy can sometimes be. Read this book and lose the "squashers!"

A Multi-purpose Referancnce Book
While I am not a professional in this feild I have found this book remarkably help full in in understanding what these human behaviours are, the theories behind them, some of the medications that are/have been used in some cases and a few of the clinical studies that have been done in this feild.

The material is written in laymens terns and is arranged alphabtically. It would be of assistance to anyone wanting a better understanding of the feild or then student who is just starting their studies in college in this feild.

In my case the book has been and still is used in a most unusal way. I am referee for war gaming and have successfully used this referance with my players to prevent "perfect" characters from existing. The players in turn become so drawned to the book they wind up reading it and learning about this whole area!

This book would have recieved 5 stars except for the fact that the material is all listed as one listing: clinical, definitions, and Pharmacology (sp?). The book would have been better off as one book with several distinct sections.
